weekend calendar bugThis weekend offers a variety of choices for live music, from California’s Spanky Pismo at Birdsnest to live jazz at Carrburritos to Courting Elizabeth at the Wine Cellar. Kids’ play “Peter Pan and Wendy” is on stage at Woodlawn School, while the Bark in the Park dog fest is Saturday at Rural Hill. Thursday night, staff from JV Washam and Davidson elementary schools square off in their annual charity basketball game. And Davidson’s women’s lacrosse team hosts the Big South conference lacrosse championship Friday through Sunday. There are also public meetings, poetry readings, and road races. Dick Sanderson Driving 4 Life golf and dinner, noon and 6:30pm, River Run Country Club, 15125 River Falls Drive, Davidson – 9th annual Dick Sanderson Driving 4 Life Golf Tournament and Dinner. Golf begins at noon, dinner at 6:30pm in the ballroom, with live music from local band Sunday Union. The tournament and dinner are in honor of Davidson resident Dick Sanderson, who was diagnosed in 2004 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Poetry Reading, 4:30pm, Hance Auditorium, Davidson College Chambers Building – Prize-winning author and self-identified cyborg Jillian Weise will read a selection of her works, which include “The Amputee’s Guide to Sex,” “The Book of Goodbyes,” and a novel titled “The Colony.” Free. Washam vs. Davidson basketball, 6:30pm, W.A. Hough High School gym, Bailey Road, Cornelius – Davidson Elementary School and JV Washam Elementary School teachers and staff will square off in their annual basketball game. Proceeds will benefit the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson. Turning Tigers, Hoppin’ Hawks, JV Washam Dance Team, and DES Faculty Cheerleaders will perform. Honors Choruses from both schools will perform the National Anthem. Doors open at 6p and tip off is at 6:30p. Tickets will be sold in advance for $3 each at the schools, and concessions will be available.

MI-Connection budget hearing, 6:30pm, Davidson Town Hall, 216 S. Main St., Davidson – Regular meeting of the board of directors of MI-Connection Communications System, the local network owned by the towns of Davidson and Mooresville. Cyclists can choose from a 10/35/60 mile bike ride and runners/walkers can choose from a 5K and a family 1-mile fun run. All rides and the 5K will be professionally timed.
